Since 2004, I have had the pleasure of working with the panther biologists at the Big Cypress National Preserve. This has given me a unique opportunity to see and photograph these wonderful creatures in their wild natural environment.

Before European Settlers arrived in Florida it is estimated that there were 1360 panthers living in Florida. The same sub-species Puma concolor coryi was also living throughout the Southeastern United States. When the first Florida Panther Recovery Plan was written in 1981, it was estimated that the total population of Puma concolor coryi was fewer than 30 individuals, all of these living in South Florida, south of Lake Okeechobee.

Since starting the recovery plan, the Florida Panther has made great progress. It is estimated that there are now 100 panthers living in South Florida. While the panther’s recovery has progress very well, there is still a long way to go to insure their survival.
